Functional Mobile Game Testing

Functional testing is the main pillar regarding quality for any type of software. In games functional testing covers any action designed or not that the player can do during their time inside the game, this includes “bending” the rules of the game by the player.

This type of test can be performed at any stage of the development but is recommended to be performed as soon as possible. Done at the later stages will incur additional cost when fixes must be done and, in some cases, delay the release of a game.

There are several ways to perform functional testing and here we recommend manual tests. It is possible to perform automated testing but there are a lot of drawbacks, one of the major ones is that games during development are fluid with lots of changes and keeping tests up to date is costly.

Manual tests cover areas that automated testing can’t, at a lesser cost or with greater flexibility. It also brings a “human” touch and will uncover issues that only a player will notice.

Overall, when the desired outcome is a high-quality game or at minimum the players satisfaction, manual functional testing of a game is a must.
